Why do they ... Call it Rocky Point?

Because early explorers found unusual rock croppings in this particular corner of southern Pender County, in the midst of otherwise flat country. Historian William S. Powell, in his North Carolina Gazetteer, dates it from William Hilton’s expedition from Barbados in the 1660s, so the name goes back awhile.
