What is ... The fountain in the middle of Market Street?

Anyone who visits Wilmington's Historical Downtown is sure not to miss the large beautiful water fountain. It is, after all, sitting in the MIDDLE of Market St. I've heard numerous rumors about the fountain, including that it was part of the Bellamy Mansion before the development of Market St. The true story behind the fountain is very interesting.

The Kenan Fountain sits in the center of Market Street at Fifth Avenue, in what is officially known as Kenan Plaza. It was a gift to the city from native William Rand Kenan Jr. (1872-1965) in memory of his parents William Rand “Buck” Kenan, a Confederate veteran, and Mary Hargrove Kenan.
