Reduce speed to low; add molasses and flour, mixing just until combined. Beat in 1/4 cup cold water. Divide dough into 2 pieces; flatten into disks and wrap individually in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm, about 11/2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly grease a mini muffin pan with butter or cooking spray. On a lightly floured surface, roll out 1 dough disk to 1?8-inch thickness. Cut dough into circles using a 2-inch round cookie cutter. (Keep remaining dough disk refrigerated.) Gently ease dough rounds into muffin cups, pressing down to form a cup shape. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden. Cool in pan on wire racks. Repeat with remaining dough.
In a saucepan over medium heat, bring eggnog to slow boil; remove from heat. Stir in chocolate chips, mixing until smooth and creamy. Let cool slightly. Pour into a large plastic zip-top bag and snip off corner. Remove cookie cups from pan and pipe filling into each cup. Garnish with freshly ground nutmeg, if desired. Let filling set before serving. Store refrigerated in an airtight container in a single layer.
Visit anytime : www.brendakingrealtor.com

Attention Real Estate Investors: www.EXIT2Wilmington.com
Fourth quarter is ending soon. It lets me satisfy my curiosity about local places and intersests. If you're planning on relocating to the New Hanover/Pender/Brunswick area or would like to learn more about the area, MyReporter.com is a great place to educate yourself on uncommon issues and the local history of surrounding areas. For instance,

How did Scotts Hill get its name?
Ben Steelman
StarNews

According to local historian Nola Nadeau, the region was named for a family named Scott who (surprise!) lived on a knoll or hill in the vicinity of what is now the Old Scotts Hill AME Church, 10720 U.S. 17, Wilmington [Map this]. Our local college is no exception.

Record enrollment fills Cape Fear Community College classes
By Chelsea Kellner
Chelsea.Kellner@StarNewsOnline.com

Professors are pulling out the folding chairs to accommodate a record number of students at Cape Fear Community College this semester.

Enrollment numbers are up 15 percent from last year already, and that’s not counting the high school, law enforcement and truck driver training students who have yet to sign up.

“The number of applications exceeds anything we’ve ever seen before,” CFCC President Eric McKeithan said. “I’m surprised we were able to find this many extra spaces.”

The slow economy that has put a financial squeeze on state-funded schools like CFCC is also sending people back to school in record numbers. That means schools are seeing record numbers of students just when they have the least money to spend on expansion.

This time last year, registration clocked in at 7,455, with some students still to register. By the time registration closed, the school saw an 8.5 percent increase from the year before, McKeithan said.

Right now, the college is looking at the possibility of enrollment topping 9,000 students for the first time. As of Friday, enrollment stood at 8,594, with many more students expected to sign on this week. These figures represent continuing students and first-time students.

To squeeze in as many students as possible, the college has more than doubled the number of classes offered online – 385 this fall compared to 157 last fall – and increased class sizes. That’s where the folding chairs came in, when some courses were standing-room-only on the first day of class.

Despite added seats in popular programs, most of them still filled up fast. College transfer and health care classes are full, as well as technical classes ranging from computer repair to cosmetology.

The school has new buildings in the works, but delays in the state construction permitting process mean CFCC won’t open a new building with classrooms until 2011.
In the meantime, the downtown campus is bustling.

“Walking down a couple of blocks of Front Street, there were our students in virtually every shop, every restaurant,” McKeithan said. “It’s good to see that kind of energy downtown.”

Chelsea Kellner: 343-2070
On Twitter.com: @StarNewsOnline

Celebrities in Wilmington?

It shouldn't be a surprise that Wilmington has attracted celebrity residents. Many films and television shows have been filmed in the area and the city has the largest studio outside of Hollywood. So, who has made notable real estate purchases in the area? MyReporter.com recently addressed this question.

Which celebrities live in the area?

It depends, of course, on how you define “famous.” Quite a few celebrities do have Wilmington-area addresses, though.

Among the more notable is Tony Award-winning actress Linda Lavin – perhaps best-known as the star of TV’s “Alice” – who fell in love with the area while filming the TV movie “Stolen Memories: Secrets from the Rose Garden” with Mary Tyler Moore, back in 1995. Lavin and her husband, actor/director Steven Bakunas, founded the Red Barn Studio, a 50-seat theater which opened in 2007 at 1122 S. Third St., Wilmington. As co-creative directors, they’ve staged productions of such works as Alfred Uhry’s “Driving Miss Daisy,” John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” and David Mamet’s “Speed-the-Plow.”

Lavin isn’t the only actor who decided to settle. Dennis Hopper spent several years in Wilmington after filming “Blue Velvet” here. He was largely responsible for the restoration of the Masonic Temple building at 17-21 N. Front St., Wilmington – now home to the City Stage theater – and he directed the 1994 feature “Chasers” here and in the Myrtle Beach area. Hopper hasn’t visited Wilmington in a few years, but he reportedly still owns real estate in Landfall and other parts of New Hanover County.

Actor/screenwriter Peter Jurasik, best known as the cosmic diplomat Londo Mollari on the TV series “Babylon 5,” has lived in Wilmington with his family for nearly a decade. He’s taught classes at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, has appeared on the locally filmed series “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill,” and co-starred in the locally filmed feature “Amy & Isabelle.”

Joseph Gallison, who played Dr. Neil Curtis on the daytime drama “Days of Our Lives,” has lived in the area for many years and has been extremely active in local theater.
The late Pat Hingle bought a house in Carolina Beach shortly after filming the Stephen King thriller “Maximum Overdrive” here in 1985; he lived here until his death Jan. 3, 2009. Nick Nolte, who filmed “Weeds” here in 1986, owned a condominium for a while at Pleasure Island.
Other current celebrity residents include “One Tree Hill” star Hilarie Burton and Henry Darrow, who played Manolito on TV’s “The High Chaparral” and who also appeared on “Santa Barbara,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The New Zorro.”

Clyde Edgerton, the New York Times best-selling author of such novels as “Raney” and “Walking Across Egypt,” owns a house in town and teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Among notable business leaders with homes in the area are Dr. Fred Eschelman, CEO of the pharmaceutical research giant PPD Inc., and Dennis Gillings, longtime CEO of the pharmaceutical services business Quintiles Transnational.

Quite a few celebrities tie up, at least temporarily, at Wrightsville Beach. DJ John Boy of radio’s “John Boy and Billy Show” has had a resort home on the island for many years and has participated in local fishing tournaments. Mystery writer Patricia Cornwell has spent many summers at Wrightsville and based the climax of her 1998 thriller “Point of Origin” there.
John Edwards, the former U.S. senator and presidential candidate, owns a resort house at Figure Eight Island; former Vice President Al Gore has rented property there. William Bennett, the former U.S. education secretary and federal drug czar and author of “The Book of Virtues,” has owned a house on Bald Head Island, as has “Today Show” celebrity Willard Scott.

Eastern Area Radio Reading Service's Wine Tasting Event a Success

Did you see the article in the August 2 StarNews about Eastern Area Radio Reading Service's wine tasting fundraiser?

We had a great turnout. Test scores, turnover, graduation statistics, and overcrowding may all be on your mind. Choosing the right school district for you includes factoring in a number of features - preferred lifestyle, cost, and everything metioned before. You will want to know where the public school districts begin and end. For public school district information, visit the following links.

New Hanover County School District Map - Great search by home address included.

Brunswick County School District Maps

Pender County School District Information

If you're interested in private schools, our web site has a list of schools, including non-public. However, keep in mind that redistricting usually occurs during the Summer. Parents from Echo Farms and Rivers Edge communities in New Hanover County are facing redistricting, because a new school is being built in the northern part of the county. This redistricting will affect 2,400 students. Read more here.

To locate information about school performance, browse the following sites:

Trulia.com - Locate homes near schools, view user ratings and reviews of schools, and see graphs of test scores and enrollment. Remembering the “out of sight, out of mind” objects increases your success in moving all of your belongings. Mayflower suggests adding the following 10 points to the top of your preparation list:

1. For the record -- Obtain copies of your and your family's medical records, including any dental and vaccine/immunization information, as well as any veterinary records for the family pet. In some cases, a notarized letter is required to receive official documentation; you may need to contact the American Medical Records Association to determine your new state's needs. You might also consider transferring current prescriptions to a drugstore in your new town.Another record you'll want to be sure to have in hand is your child's permanent school record. School records are usually required when registering your child at his/her new school. Often, copies are not sufficient and require a raised seal

2. Buried treasure -- If you've hidden any valuables around the house, be sure to collect them before leaving. You should carry valuable items such as jewelry with you or keep them in a safe deposit box instead of packing them on the moving van.

3. Old phone numbers -- Pack phone books from your existing residence to take with you. You may think you'll remember the numbers you frequently call now, but more likely you'll spend a small fortune on directory assistance charges to contact old friends or tie up loose ends.

4. Taken to the cleaners -- Remember to collect all items that are being cleaned, stored or repaired (for example, dry cleaning, shoes, watches, etc.). Also, remember to return library books, movie rentals and anything else you may have checked out.

5. What's your new address? -- Keep your new address handy in your wallet or purse. In the flurry of preparing for a move, you may forget your new address -- important information when forwarding periodicals, mail and credit card bills, as well as keeping in touch with old friends.
6. Spic and span -- Remember to leave out cleaning supplies for the final “once-over” before closing the door for good, or make arrangements in advance for a service to clean for you. To reduce the amount of things you take with you, if you are cleaning the home yourself, use up previously purchased cleaning products, and then throw away the empty containers when you leave.

7. The opener -- Many people often forget to take the electric garage door opener out of their automobile before leaving. Remember to leave the opener for the new residents.

8. Remember “Rover” -- In most cases, moving companies cannot transport animals or plants. Plan ahead and make arrangements for their safe transfer.

9. Bank on it – It's wise to open a checking account in your new town about a month prior to your move so that you have immediate access to your funds. It enables you to have a little cash on hand for unexpected expenses. On occasion, retailers will decline to cash “out-of-town” checks.

10. Keys to success – Remember the collection of spare house keys. Whether it means retrieving keys from neighbors or from under the rock next to the front door, don't forget to gather all sets before you depart.

NC Green Communities

Green Eco Communities has a list of green communities in NC. Now comes virtual staging.

Here's how it works: A real estate agent e-mails photos of a vacant home to a stager, who digitally adds tables, chairs, lamps, art work and other items to make the space look more inviting. The agent uses the enhanced photos for his Web site, the Multiple Listing Service, flyers and other advertising.

Read the rest of the article here...

So, other than the 'virtual' aspect, is this any different that normal home staging? You either love them or hate them. They can be as low as $15 per month covering public pool maintenance, road maintenance, or commons area upkeep...or they can be as high as $199+ per month covering yard maintenance, pool maintenance, common area upkeep, golf club access, security, etc. Some buyers purposefully avoid communities with HOAs, because they do not like the building restrictions or monthly fees. If you choose to take advantage of a community with an HOA, make sure you thoroughly read the covenants BEFORE making an offer on a home or lot. Ask questions if you are unsure about certain statements and remember to always keep a copy of the covenants if you do make an offer.

One family, recently spotlighted in the StarNews' Animal Tales, has learned what kind of an effect an HOA can have on their family. Recently, they were informed their elderly dog was over the 20 lb weight limit allowed at Willoughby Park, a restriction they claimed was not part of the covenants they received when they bought their townhome in 2007. Now, they must either give away their four-legged family member or sell their home. Despite pleading, the HOA has refused to allow the dog to remain, but it is very hard to find elderly dogs homes.

So, who is in the wrong and how should this problem be resolved?

Tom Grady brings up some important points in his column. However, this announcement must come with a word of caution (even that sounds too extreme). This is an adaptation. There will be no accents (gasp!) and minimal set pieces in an effort to show the universal appeal of the romantic story despite being written for another social class structure.

Personally, I can't help but find my senses appealing to the very style choices of the group putting on the production. Considering the pub pays tribute to the cult hit Firefly (Brown coats were the independence fighters and the ship on their web site is from the Joss Whedon series) and their P & P poster is very similar to the Jane Austen comic books, one can only assume they have a high appreciation for creativity.

Showtimes: 8 p.m. July 16-18, 23-25 and July 30-Aug. 1, and 5 p.m. July 19 and 26

Local Parks in and Around Wilmington

Parks in and around Wilmington, NC, are popular spots. When the weather warms up, they become hot spots for group meetings, little league games, nature walks, picnics, tennis lessons, and play areas for children. Even when the weather is cool, area residents love to use the parks for running, biking, and other forms of exercise. Maintain a proper mowing height to avoid the many problems that occur when grass is cut too short. You should never be cut shorter than 1/3 off its height at any one time." The optimum height depends on the species - for centipedegrass it's about 1 1/2 inches and for it's 3 to 4 inches. (For other species see www.turffiles.ncsu.edu.)
2. Take a soil test. Any time is OK, but now is good because it's not so busy at the the Department of Agriculture where they do the testing. This will determine the pH of your turf's soil and proper soil fertility, then tell you what you need to apply in the way of fertilizer.
3. Once you've got a healthy lawn, it's easy to control weeds. "I always recommend doing this by hand.A pocket knife or weeding fork will do the job. Remove a few every day to keep under control - without the use of herbicide."
4. Make sure the turf you planted is still suitable for its location; if a large tree now shades portions of your centipede lawn, you may need to replace it with a shade-tolerant variety like. An alternative is to remove the turf from the shaded area/s and replace with a ground cover like mondo grass, ajuga or lirope.
5. Do fertilize according to grass species. For example, centipede, is a low maintenance turf that requires very little fertilizer - just one application in May or June of a low nitrogen, zero phosphorus but high potassium product like a 5-0-15, at the proper rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Another large technical company has chosen to expand into NC. It was announced today that Apple has chosen NC for its new $1 Billion data enter. This project will be built over a period of nine years. It has been projected that the construction will create At least 250 new jobs and eventually 3,000 jobs through its operation. The center's location has not been chosen yet, but it has been reported that it "must locate in one of the state’s more economically distressed Tier 1 or Tier 2 areas" (N.C. lures Apple to build $1B data center, Triangle Business Journal, June 3). So, it's not too big of a surprise that the National Association of Realtors has published an article stating that existing-home sales rose in April. This increase is in part due to the natural sale fluctuations that occur during the warmer months and the first-time home buyer $8000 stimulus. Most of the early structures were wood, and firefighting technology was fairly primitive, so a number of fires in the late 1700s and early 1800s destroyed much of Wilmington’s earlier heritage.

To see homes and lots available in the Wilmington zip code 28401 (including Downtown), visit our MLS search page.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://exitcoast.blogspot.com/2009/05/what-is-oldest-house-in-wilmington.html' title='What is ... Google, which is in the midst of creating widgets for allowing consumers to see and monitor their power consumption, said that SDG&E is one of eight initial utility partners launching with the Internet giant. The partnership will allow San Diego Gas & Electric customers with smart meters to access that smart meter information via Google and its PowerMeter widget software. Google said that its widgets are only available to a limited group of partners, but will roll out more widely later this year with other partners. posted on Wednesday, May 20, 2009

http://fwix.com/share/909804

Why do they ... So, what is the answer?

Ben Steelman
StarNews

Hard to say. The Wilmington thoroughfare is named for James T. Kerr, a Confederate veteran who was a prominent New Hanover County truck farmer in the late 1800s. (Some of Kerr Avenue apparently runs through, or over, some of his former fields.)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://exitcoast.blogspot.com/2009/05/why-do-they-pronounce-kerr-avenue-like.html' title='Why do they ... Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Economy.com, facetiously picked a date when home prices would stop falling: Dec. 15, 2009. Other observers weren't so precise, but they did generally agree that the federal government's efforts to shore up the market would take effect by the end of 2009 or early in 2010. Analysts also predicted that consumers will spend less on remodeling. Eric Belsky, executive director at Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies, predicted that spending on remodeling would fall 12.3 percent by the end of this year compared to last. Analysts project that the credit crisis will loosen, although people with blemished credit records may continue to have trouble getting mortgage loans .Source www.wrar.com
Visit anytime http://www.brendakingrealtor.com/

OPEN HOUSE: 231 Hearthside Dr., Rocky Point

MLS#429666 231 Hearthside Dr. in Rocky Point, NC 28457

Saturday, May 16th 11-2 pm.

Please stop by! According to a USA Today film critic in 1984, the movie had “gaping plot holes” and “a parade of badly directed performances.” The film, which starred Drew Barrymore as girl who start fires with her mind, was hardly an Oscar contender.

Even here in Southeastern North Carolina where the film was shot, locals have not marked the day with so much as a banner on a city light pole.
And yet, for this region, and maybe even all of North Carolina, “Firestarter,” released May 11, 1984, was a history-making movie.

New Article! Moving with Dogs and Cats

Moving can be a very stressful experience for pets. Dogs and cats are territorial creatures of habit. So, moving to a new home means taking your pet out of its comfort zone, creating new habits, and marking new boundaries. Some people don’t realize that pets can get homesick. Like children, they need to be comforted during the moving process.

Preparing for Change
The best way to make the transition easy is to surround them with their favorite items and food. This includes:
· Chew toys
· Food bowls
· Treats
· Blankets/bedding
Having these items when you reach your new home will assure your pets that they aren’t being abandoned and recreate their comfort zone. If you will be travelling separate from your pet (i.e. on an airplane or bus), leave an article of clothing or blanket that smells like you in their carrier. This will help calm them.

Read more here.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://exitcoast.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-article-moving-with-dogs-and-cats.html' title='New Article!
